At Aquanauts we are not just a dive training centre, we also have an active social life based around our Dive Club.

We have monthly club meetings and events, with activities ranging from expert talks to haunted walks.

Our club meets once a month for these activities, we also organise regular shore dives and often gang up with our Conservation and Archaeology team to get involved with local causes.

Plymouth Jive Club is an independent modern jive club that first came into being in April 1998, formed by the core members of the folding Plymouth University Dance Society Jive Club that had started in 1993.

The objective of the club is to teach and promote the modern jive dance style in a light-hearted and social environment, whilst keeping class prices at a reasonable level (we pride ourselves on being able to keep our prices low). The most important thing is that our members enjoy themselves and their jive dancing. Visiting jivers to the south-west region are always welcome at our weekly sessions.

Humanism is a comprehensive life stance that upholds human reason, ethics, and justice, and rejects supernaturalism, pseudo-science, and superstition.

We meet regularly to hear invited speakers talk, discuss and socialise. We are interested in science, culture, philosophy, ethical and moral issues.

We tend to be atheists and agnostics. We can be found on facebook.

Photography. Club Focus, which meets every Monday at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club between 7pm and 9pm, encourages both new and experienced photographers to develop their abilities in a friendly and welcoming environment

From simple point and shoot camera-users who take snap shots to experienced photographers, the club says it welcomes all and focuses on improving skills rather than holding competitions.

The club’s new programme includes guest speakers, skills workshops as well as field trips and social events.

Mac Graham, club chairman, said: “We welcome people at our club, whatever their level of expertise. Traditionally camera clubs focus on competitions but we wanted to create a totally different club with a relaxed atmosphere and actively encourage members to share their knowledge so that we can all constantly improve our knowledge and expertise.”

The Lit Window Book Group was started by two friends, as a way to enhance their reading and love of books, and provide an alternative to other available book groups which meet during the day. As most of us work during the week, it had to be an evening meeting. And it`s free, apart from the cost of a book each month. (nb. We`ve been offered a 10% discount at the Bookshelf in Saltash, if we order as a group, which may be an incentive to some potential members?)

We have a core membership of 4 currently, who meet in each other`s houses. We meet every month, the date changes to fit in with our plans, but generally it’s the second Wednesday of each month. We have a varied and generally quite lively discussion based upon a main book each month, which is set by members in turn, plus the chance to swap any books people wish to pass along. We also have a short session on recommendations from the group, where each member gives a brief introduction to the author, plot, etc. Each month the member who chose the book chairs the discussion. This can be based on a presentation, a list of questions to the group, or perhaps an article or review. (There`s no right or wrong way as long as it sparks debate).

Previous books read by the group include `Solar` by Ian Mckewan, ( group voted 6/10 ), and `A Thousand Splendid Suns` by Khaled Hosseini, ( voted 8/10 ). We try and choose quality literature, and vary the genres. Discussion usually looks at plot, character, narrative, effects of structure, and interpretation of themes. We also vote on each book out of 10 at the end of the session, and offer a summing -up statement based our enjoyment or dissatisfaction. It’s stimulating, provocative, and (if you love reading) fun!

Plymouth Proprietary Library is the oldest library in Plymouth; established in 1810 and in 2010, celebrated its Bicentenary. Since 2009 the library has embarked on establishing its own Writers Group – with remarkable success. Initially formed by subscription members only, the Plymouth Proprietary Library Writers Group welcomes non-members for a small fee at each attendance. We work independently of other Writers Groups as our focus is to secure the future of the library and our purpose is to nurture the creative writing imagination through short stories, poetry, novellas and play-writing. We run two sessions each month on Saturday mornings from 10:00 – 12:00: one for short stories and poetry and another for play-writing. We also explore Haiku, Tanka and the literature of other cultures. Creative Writing Workshops are also held with the kind assistance of Exeter University.

Our other activities have included ‘Poetry in the Park’ – a seasonal venture of spoken literature undertaken with Moor View Park and Freedom Fields Park. In 2010 we printed our own short story book based on Gothic, historical and mystery fiction called: Arcanum: A Collection of Short Stories . We are lucky in that by owning our own venue, we are able to host literary lectures and talks given by a wide range of highly qualified speakers; some of whom are also members of Plymouth Proprietary Library. We also work in close collaboration with the University of Plymouth.

Membership is open to all.

The Lions Club of Plymouth is part of Lions Club International (the largest charitable organisation in the world) have meetings every month. Lion members give their time and skills freely to raise money for charity and community service projects.

What do we do Locally
Our scope is wide, our aims are practical and our service is needed and includes:

Assisting communities and families in distress.

Visiting and giving help to housebound people.

We purchase equipment for hospitals and hospices.

Social activities and outings for lonely, blind, deaf, deprived and disabled people of any age group.

Special activities and provision of equipment and teaching aids for physically and mentally handicapped children and adults.

Assistance with transport for hospital visiting, community organisations, disabled people’s clubs, etc.

We help individuals in a variety of ways from painting and decorating through tidying up gardens, to financial help with household bills.

We distribute food parcels at Christmas.

We hospital visit.

Sponsorship of Medic-Alert, a system for speedily identifying personal allergies and illesses in the event of an emergency.

Encouraging young people to become involved in community service.

Financial support for other local voluntary organisations and charity groups.

Help in educating and sponsoring drug awareness schemes within the community., specifically by financing a drug awareness programme with TACADE through schools.

We provide Old Folk’s parties.

We help the blind and the deaf (the white stick for the blind originated from the Lions in USA).

We sponsor a Lions Youth Award Scheme to highlight those young people who have given freely of their spare time to their local community. The major objective is to bring to the attention of the community what is best in the youth of today.

We run Swimming galas for handicapped people.

We run a national Youth Football competition which is now the largest youth football competition in Great Britain.

We work with the British Diabetic Association to spread diabetes awareness.

Plymouth Jazz Club was formed by a group of jazz enthusiasts in April 1984 with the objective of promoting live jazz music in Plymouth. Right from it’s inception it has managed to promote in excess 15 gigs per year featuring local, regional, national and international jazz artists and groups.

It is a members club run by a committee of 9 who are elected annually at an annual general meeting. Membership is open to all who appreciate jazz music, the annual subscription is £7.00 or £10 for married couples or “partners” living at the same address.

All events are open to the public at large, but members get £2.00 off of the ticket price for all gigs. There is also a reduced rate for bona fide students.
