Clubs and Societies in Plymouth |
| |
|
| |
Plymouth Jazz Club was formed in 1984 by a local vibrophone player Tony Harris and a group of local jazz enthusiasts. It is run as a members club managed by an elected committee of nine and at the moment has 320 members. |
| |
| The current officers are: Chairman Richard Orme, Secretary Mike Collier, Treaurer Clive Vaughan. |
| |
Since it was formed it has promoted over 500 live music events in 20 plus venues in and around Plymouth. It has promoted artists and bands from all over the UK as well as from the USA, Europe and South Africa. The groups promoted have ranged from youth jazz orchestras, local jazz bands to top UK artists and bands. |
| |
| Currently it meets twice a month on the 1st and third Sundays from 8.00pm to 11.00pm in the Function Suite of the Mermaid, Frogmore Avenue, Eggbuckland. Non members are welcome. |
| |
| Membership is open to all, annual subs are as follows: |
- Member £7.50
- Joint membership (Two at same address) £10.00
- Student £3.00
|
| Entrance to gigs at the Mermaid range from £6.00 to £9.00, but members get a £2.00 discount. |
| |
| In the summer months the club organises two jazz picnics: |
- The Summer Jazz Picnic at Saltram House.
In this event patrons are invited to bring their own picnics and dine on the lawns of Saltram house whilst listening to the music of two Tradition or New Orleans bands who play from 6.00pm to 11.00pm.
- "Down by the Riverside" at Morwellham Quay near Tavistock. Again patrons bring their own picnics, but as this is a large site, there are 5 bands of different styles of jazz playing throughout the evening. Again 6.00pm to 11.00pm.
For those who come without food or drink, both events have licenced bars and stalls selling snacks and light refreshments.
- Plus:
A Riverboat Shuffle featuring a jazz quartet, starting from Phoenix Wharf on the Barbican up to Morwellham Quay and back.
